Fairlawn Hosts Wheelchair Tennis Tourney

To celebrate Physical Therapy Month and to raise awareness about wheelchair sports, PTs and PTAs at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital in Worcester, MA, took on a group of athletes with disabilities from the local Bay State Wheelers in a wheelchair tennis tournament.

Players competed in a variety of combinations, including wheelchair singles and "one-up, one-down" matches where the athletes in wheelchairs took on players without wheelchairs.

"The 'one-up, one-down' matches were pretty even, and the Wheelers' serving abilities exceeded that of many of the able-bodied players," said tournament coordinator Denise DiLorenzo, PTA. "The tournament showed how well people who use wheelchairs can participate in athletics. They really are not at a disadvantage--they can play like anybody else."

Gadsden PTs Sponsor Balance and Falls Screenings

The PT staff from Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Gadsden, AL, took PT Month's "Health in Balance" theme to the local community by sponsoring three screenings for balance assessment and fall prevention. During the screenings, participants performed several tests and were assessed for balance confidence and risk factors for falls.

The PT department stayed active by also sponsoring its Third Annual Haunted Trail 5K Race and a One-Mile Fun Run. Proceeds from the events went to the Foundation for Physical Therapy Fund.
