Faizool Ali, PTA, was a healthy 24-year-old living in Middletown, NY, when he fell asleep on his couch one night in 2000. Upon awakening a few hours later, he felt numbness in his right calf.

"I made it to the nurses' station [at Saint Teresa's Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center] and the head nurse could tell right away I had a deep vein thrombosis," he told ADVANCE. "The tissue was dying and the infection was moving further up my leg...I said if there was no saving it, let's amputate as soon as possible to protect my knee joint."

Following the amputation, Ali had two main goals-to return full-time as a PTA and to play basketball with a prosthetic at the same level he had with two healthy legs.
