Proper hand hygiene practices, particularly in healthcare settings, help prevent the spread of potentially fatal infections. Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston has adopted a strict hand hygiene program that requires healthcare providers to promote and practice good hand hygiene measures to reduce the risk of infection among patients.
ADVANCE recently visited Mass General to gain an inside perspective of the program and how it got its start. In this video, Robert Dorman, PT, DPT, GCS, discusses the hospital's aim to empower patients by providing strategies they may use when asking their healthcare providers to practice hand hygiene.
As the hand hygiene champion for the physical and occupational therapy department at Mass General, Dr. Dorman discusses the hospital's challenges and successes in encouraging and retaining staff compliance.
David C. Hooper, MD, chief, infection control unit, explains the hospital's focus on providing various ways to stress the importance of teaching patients about the importance of practicing hand hygiene while in the hospital to help prevent infections.
