A.T. Still Offers Fall Risk Outreach Courses

MESA, AZ -- A.T. Still University's School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS) physical therapy, occupational therapy, audiology and athletic training programs have begun the 2013 Still Standing: Fall Prevention Outreach courses, marking the program's fifth year. The courses are offered free of charge for Valley residents who are at risk for falling.

The courses are located at 21 various sites throughout the Valley, aimed at serving people 65 and older. Over 300 people are registered to attend the 2013 winter courses.

The Still Standing: Fall Prevention Outreach is sponsored by ATSU-ASHS and is led by 46 ATSU students and directed by 10 ATSU faculty, providing instruction to the participants. To date, and in partnership with the City of Phoenix Department of Human Services, SCAN Health Plan Arizona, East Valley Adult Resources, and Banner Health, ATSU-ASHS has served nearly 1,500 Valley residents.

"Falls in the elder population are a pressing public health concern in our community and around the country," said Elton Bordenave, MEd, CHC, director of the ATSU Aging Project for the Mesa campus. "This outreach gives our students an opportunity to directly help seniors at risk for falls. At the same time, the students gain experience working with seniors and delivering evidence-based material. It is a real win-win."

For the first time, Still Standing: Fall Prevention Outreach is conducting two courses in American Sign Language. One course is also offered in Spanish.

Additional courses will be offered in spring 2013. Contact Elton Bordenave at 480.219.6077 or for more information.

A.T. Still University provides graduate level healthcare education and is comprised of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, the School of Health Management, the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, the Arizona School of Health Sciences, and the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona.
