Kennedy Krieger Takes Patients Skiing

BALTIMORE -- From March 31 through April 6, Daniel Becker, MD -- board-certified neurologist at the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore -- will take five patients adaptive skiing in Colorado at the Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte.

In previous excursions, Dr. Becker's patients have gone scuba diving, participated in marathons, and played wheelchair rugby. In 2011, Dr. Becker and a colleague took 11 paralyzed individuals to the Cayman Islands to study the potential benefits of scuba diving on the central nervous system. Dr. Becker has also participated in an honorary full-speed practice run around the course of the 2012 Baltimore Grand Prix.

At Kennedy Krieger, Dr. Becker's research centers on the role of neurological activity, as well as embryonic stem cells, in spinal cord injury repair, with special interest in pediatric models of spinal cord injury.

The Kennedy Krieger Institute serves more than 18,000 individuals with injuries to the brain and spinal cord each year through inpatient and outpatient clinics, home and community services, and school-based programs.
