Sunrise Medical Donates Hundreds of Wheelchairs to Haiti

View Comments (0)Print ArticleEmail Article

Sunrise Medical has donated 380 Wheelchairs to UCP Wheels for Humanity, a non-profit organization in North Hollywood, California.  The donation includes a variety of standard and adult custom manual wheelchairs.

Since 1996, UCP Wheels for Humanity has focused on refurbishing wheelchairs and individually custom fitting them to children and adults with disabilities around the developing world.   Upon news of the Earthquake, UCP Wheels worked with air freight partners to get 165 wheelchairs to Haiti very quickly. According to UCP Wheels President David Richard, "This donation came at a very important time. Help is still urgently needed for the millions of people affected by the disaster, especially for the most vulnerable - children and adults with disabilities, and victims of the earthquake who have become temporarily or permanently disabled."

"We are pleased to be able to support this organization and their commitment to providing the freedom of mobility to those in need around the world" said Pete Coburn, President, US Commercial Operations for Sunrise Medical.  "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Haiti earthquake victims, their families and the thousands of relief volunteers.  The support and donations from our industry has been truly remarkable and we feel fortunate that we are in a position to help with this great cause."

In addition to manufacturer donations, UCP Wheels for Humanity also takes used wheelchair donations from end users in the Southern California area.  Sunrise will be helping promote this to fans on their Facebook page "Quickie Wheelchairs."   To make a donation to UCP Wheels for Humanity or for more information please visit their website at http://www.ucpwfh.org/.
