Genesis Rehab at Baldock Health Care Centre

Irwin, PA

When our company challenged all rehab teams to make Fridays more "functional," we felt that our rehab team was already accomplishing that every day. And so, our team brainstormed how to go above and beyond. We wanted to find a way to give back to those who help us achieve those functional goals. Without question, we knew we wanted to honor our activities department.

Our activities department is an integral part of our residents' day. They dream up a variety of activities from the usual to the unusual, and we like to believe ours is a cut above the rest. However, expenses for many of the creative and exciting events add up fast. This served as the launching point for "Fundraising Functional Fridays."

We launched our first fundraiser last spring, named "Fruity Friday," in which we sold fruit to raise money. The OT staff orchestrated the event, beginning with higher-level residents preparing to return home. Each resident had "functional goals" to achieve. Some worked on dynamic standing tolerance, bilateral upper extremity integration and strengthening skills. Others focused on fine motor, safety and reorientation to "kitchen tasks" such as reaching, bending and opening and closing cupboards.

Our physical therapists worked on patient treatment goals, and implemented tasks according to need. They had residents carry items from the dietary area to the rehab kitchen, working on dynamic balance, use of weighted items and gait speed. One resident required ambulation on a concrete surface, so that person hung signs in our outdoor pavilion area to achieve mobility goals.

The speech language pathologists worked on cognitive/language goals with their residents. They created ad slogans and made signs using computer skills. On the day of the event, those who needed to practice voice inflection made announcements on the overhead paging systems, while others set up a cash register station to work on money exchange with end customers.

"Fruity Friday" was such a huge success, we have since held two more "Functional Fundraising Fridays." On Memorial Day, we held an old-fashioned hot dog sale, and for July 4thwe sold barbeque food items. Each event includes a new group of residents tasked with individualized job roles according to their functional needs within all three disciplines.

Each "Functional Fundraising Friday" brought in more than a hundred dollars for the activities department. It was a win/win situation and our facility became closer as a whole. By working together, we experienced a true family atmosphere. We now look forward to these fundraising events as they have been so well received by the administrators, staff and families. We just finished a Labor Day fundraiser and before we know it, the holiday season will be here and we will do it all again! Why? Because it's fun, it's Friday, it's functional and it "fundraises" for the betterment and quality of life of our residents!
